Have you had a chance to dismantle and inspect it?
If the issue is not causing instability (software wise), the issue may be
isolated to the transit to the lcd matrix board, or the matrix board itself.
Hoping it's a good place to start.

No, it arrangements never worked out. He dropped the price, then someone swiped
it for 125 before I could. After arrangements fell through, I was thinking of
just fixing and selling for no turnaround, but it's gone now. =/
the position seems the same but they come and go with different screen
data, a clear screen shows no bars.. the menu shows some, a basic listing
shows more and it changes as lines scroll

I notice that Nickel-Zinc batteries are rarely mentioned in this sort of
discussion; they do require somewhat different charging parameters but
otherwise are pretty similar to NiCds, but with a 1.6V voltage instead of 1.2.
When it comes to rechargeable 1.5V alkalines my experience
