2018-07-23 Thread Bert Put
Hi Lee,
I bought one of these a few years ago now for my Kaypro 2X and managed to
salvage a bunch of floppies with it.  Very happy with it so far although file
transfer gets clunky due to having to run the HXE files through a converter to
get IMG files that I can directly manipulate.
Cheers,     Bert

You made a copy of the dvi system disk on 3.5" ?
You somehow got a dvi and dvi-dos to use more than 180K per disk side?
Or is the dvi just creating bizarrely formatted 3.5" disks that only use
the first 40 tracks, or double-spaced evey other track, or something ?
It's really using HD disks? (1.44M instead of DD 720K)

I guess a 3.5" DD disk (ie: 720K, not HD 1.44M), a single side of that
would be 360K on 80 tracks, and 40 tracks of that would be 180K, which
would be the same as the original single-sided DD 40-track 5.25" drive &
disk. And I think 3.5" always runs at 300 rpm whether HD or DD, same as
5.25" DD (5.25" HD 1.2M runs at 360rpm), so I guess dvi dos and the
controller chip & firmware in the dvi could
do it that way.

I'll send the ROM images your way. I never bothered to post them because
I figured a better solution was to find a box that didn't need ROM

 Greg,

What processor are the android tv units in your kits based on? A
rockchip or amlogic? I ask because my rockchip box has an older
processor. It works but every now and then I get a communication
error. This is due to the USB/Serial conversion lag. My 200 never
has issues. For my NEC I modified the ROM to a slight(10ms) delay
to resolve it. The faster processors they have now are not likely
to have the same issue as my first one but I wanted to ask.
Glad to see this in kit form. I was thinking of doing this but I
really don't have the time. Thank you for putting it together.

[M100] Current (2018) RAM/RAM disk options

2018-07-23 Thread Mr. Wayne Lorentz
Can anyone give a brief overview of the current state of RAM expansion and RAM
disk options for the 100?

All of the information I see online is at least a decade old.

I’m especially interested to learn if there are any ways to add storage to the
system expansion bus on the bottom. My option ROM slot has the AP software
chip loaded in it, and I’m very reluctant to remove it for sentimental reasons.

That was my experience as well. A quick retry and all is good. I plan to
purchase a newer box soon to see if it's just a matter of a faster
processor or the USB itself. My phone never gives me this problem. But
my solution was to tweak the SARDOS ROMs I am using to add a little more
delay. It's not as big a delay as the ROMs I made for Bluetooth but I
added enough to never have the communication error. I can make the
details available if you need them.

2018-07-23 Thread Kurt McCullum
Greg,

What processor are the android tv units in your kits based on? A
rockchip or amlogic? I ask because my rockchip box has an older
processor. It works but every now and then I get a communication error.
This is due to the USB/Serial conversion lag. My 200 never has issues.
For my NEC I modified the ROM to a slight(10ms) delay to resolve it. The
faster processors they have now are not likely to have the same issue as
my first one but I wanted to ask.
Glad to see this in kit form. I was thinking of doing this but I really
don't have the time. Thank you for putting it together.

Well - as long as it doesn't get to cut-throat. I have to build in small
batches to avoid laying out too much cash on parts for boards that I have
no idea what the demand will be for. It would be nice to stock up on the
parts, but that's not financially viable for me. :(

The survey that I did ... last year, was it? -- indicated that the demand
was roughly 80 units. I've sold 20 now. Not sure how many others have been
built and sold in the meantime. But, in the intervening year, demand has
probably changed, too.

Re: [M100] tpdd mcomm setups

2018-07-23 Thread Kurt McCullum
Tom,

No, you don't need any software. If you have a windows PC, that version
of mComm can inject TS-DOS or TEENY as well. It's available for
download here
www.club100.org/memfiles/index.php?action=downloadfile=Setup25-
0.EXE=Kurt McCullum&

There may be somebody on the list that can create a utility disk for
your TPDD. That loads FLOPPY.CO which works fine but TS-DOS is better.
Once you get a TPDD client loaded it's easy to use your TPDD.

Re: [M100] Loading binary files

2018-07-23 Thread Kurt McCullum
Wayne,

I should have ready your message first before writing my previous email.
Transferring CO files is best done with a TPDD client. It takes the
headache out of things. TEENY is a nice small one that will allow you to
load those files without too much trouble. TS-DOS is more user friendly
but it takes about 6k to run so that may not leave you enough room to
load everything for lpm. There are two automated ways to load TEENY that
I am aware of. Either use the TEENY.EXE on a DOS PC and follow the
instructions or use mComm on your Windows PC or Android device to inject
it. A third but manual way would be to load the untokenized BASIC code
that mComm uses to inject TEENY or TS-DOS over a terminal program. The
TEENY code is the same that TEENY.EXE uses and the TS-DOS code is
something I came up with. I don't have any of that code in front of me
right now but I could send it to you if the other methods don't work.
You will need a TPDD emulator on the PC side of things.

Re: [M100] Loading binary files

2018-07-23 Thread Kurt McCullum
mComm can inject TEENY or TS-DOS for the 100/102, 200 or NEC. It's
actually just some BASIC code that I put together that pokes the program
into memory from HEX. If anyone wants to see the code they can go
through the injection process and save the file rather than run it. That
will give you a DO file that has all the BASIC code in it for injecting
DOS. It might be helpful for anyone wanting to add that Feature to their
TPDD emulator.
But it sounds like Peter's problem is more about running a CO file
rather than injecting DOS. I think there is a write up on club 100 about
running CO files. It's one of those things that people stumble on until
they have gone through the process a couple of times. A CO file is
designed to run in a certain location in memory. But the CO file itself
isn't sitting in that location. I'll do my best to try and explain.
Here is an example that is a bit on the extreme side but should show the
point. Take a Tandy 200, and the Romulus chess program. With TS-DOS
running in rom and DOS active, I go to BASIC and try to run it from the
virtual TPDD device.
RUNM "0:CHESSX.CO"

What I get is the following
Top: 42312
End: 56000
Exe: 42312
?OM Error

The Error means that you have an out of memory problem. BASIC can't
run the program until you clear the space for it to run. So I do
the following
Clear 0, 42312
RUNM "0:CHESS.CO"

and now the chess program runs. What the Clear command does is to lower
the available memory and create a location for the program to run.
Without this, you cannot run any CO program. The trick is knowing how
much memory to clear. That is found by looking at the Top: line when you
first try to run a CO. Hope that helps.
Kurt
