programming the serial protocol. There is source code to laddiealpha,
dlplus available.
A list member did some reverse engineering of the firmware, you can check

I have always suspected that the little aluminum shield could be a
grounding hazard.
I would look closely at the clearances there and make sure that it is not
grounding the supply.
I think you can even assemble it without the shield...
just checked, don't seem to have a service manual for
