[Mac-access]: How to get VoiceOver to read Documents

How do I get VoiceOver to read Libre Office Documents? Or even Mail, Pdf's Pages, text edit etc? CMD A does not read or beep. Two finger swipe up or down does not read anything either. With Rotor on Paragraphs, it only reads letters at a time, or occasionally words. Doesn't seem to matter
