Hold that down for 30 seconds at power up then turn on voice over.
I do this every time there's a major update to osx.
On Apr 29, 2015,
hold down cmd r at power up and hold the key stroke for 30 seconds then let up
and start voice over. You will be presented with a language chooser and
hopefully taken to the utilities table.

seems like somethingn os auto deleting it but I can't think of what it could
be. Have you called apple to discuss what's going on?

I've successfully used gnumail on the mac, but that was a release or two back,
and I'm only using snow leopard, so no clue if it works on the latest os
version or not. It worked pretty well when I tried it though.
