I received confirmation from another source that iWorks will not update unless
one has Mavericks installed. I am just waiting to receive an external hard

The percentages should show up as an item on the update page, although I
personally think that the new iWork may not install if you don't have the
newest OS. Don't quote me on that, though. :-)
