Hello George, Michael, and Others, In Mavericks, you turn on multiple text selection after interacting with the list or table with VO-Command-Return (or as Zack says, "vo-cmd-enter"). You select individual items with VO-Return. A good place to check commands is the Appendix A list of Commands

hey listers, i’m having a bit of a problem. in mountain lion i could interact with a list of files, turn cursor tracking off and select files by hitting VO command space. if i had tracks 1 through 10 and i wanted tracks 3, 6, 8, and 10 this command was perfect. in mavrics i can’t seem to get it
