I have downloaded some books from the BARD site, (which is the place where
those of us in the US can download books in audio format from our library.) so
my books are now in my downloads folder and I have located them. when I open a
book, which is a zipped archive it says archiver

the only extraction software I have is what came with my mac mini. do I need
something else? if so, recommendations are appreciated. there is no archiver
listed in my context menu.

No. just hit cmd o and it will unarchive to a folder in the directory the
archive was in.
