sorry for my previous posting.
i feel a bit of a fool.
just after checking all my settings i thought i would check my mute switch on the side of my phone and it was in the wrong position so that is why i wasn't getting any audible feedback while navigating my i-phone. i have ended up wasting my time restoring my settings and the problem could have been resolved in a few seconds. no wonder i heard it say muting when my new friend was trying to get me to store their number. she must have flicked the mute switch before handing it back to me.
