Running Mavericks, when I go through my messages, I can delete messages and
before I'm through them all, several have popped back in the list.
Others pop back everyday. Right now, I am seeing messages that are dated back
from April.
Is this just an Imap/ gmail pain in the butt issue?

Are you updated? I don't have tha tissue. Try unchecking all mail in show in
imap under the gmail settings on the gmail website.
