Hello,
My display began to flicker on about the lower third
of the screen, and is now always dimmed in the same
area. Is it time to get ahead of a display failure and
just replace it? Or is there software that is able to look
at the functioning of a display to analyze it?

Sounds like you just have a bulb out. They're tough to replace, though. What
brand is it? If it's a cheap-o off brand, you may be better off with a new one.
If it's an expensive Apple one or an iMac, take it by MacAuthority and/or the
Apple store and have them quote it for you.
