pdf form letter?

Hello,

I've posted this to both the macosx_perl and macosx_applications lists - sorry if you've received 2 copies.

I'm looking for an application that will convert a word/appleworks/openoffice document to a human/perl editable pdf file - the pdf file created by acrobat reader is not suitable. I want to be able to create a form letter in pdf using this file as my template - I plan to stick a few to-be-interpolated perl variables in this template. I've looked at many of the PDF perl modules (I use PDF::Labels to generate mailing labels) BUT I don't want to create the template line by line (or paragraph by paragraph) - unless it's absolutely necessary.

Any suggestions?
