Almost every time I try to connect to a website using FireFox I get the
message, "The connection was reset while the page was loading"
I've tried disabling Sophos AV On demand Scanning but this doesn't appear to
make a difference. I also tried reverting to an earlier version of FireFox,

No, but the first diagnostic you should try is to create a new, virgin user ID
on your Mac, log into it, and try FireFox from there. If it works, you'll know
the problem is something you're running in your everyday ID.
