Does anyone out there know the proper command for running the Apple hardware
diagnostic DVD program from single user mode? I googled, but could not find

You don't run it from single user mode. You run it from the DVD,

As I said earlier, I am not able to boot with command-option to get a boot
menu. It never gets to the boot menu, so I can't ever choose a different
drive to boot from.

OK, the hardware test finally found an error and stopped (at 1 hour, 32
minutes). The error message is:
4HDD/11/4000: SATA(0,0)
I guess that must be the hard drive. If that's the only error reported, can I
feel pretty sure that the hard drive is the only bad component?
