I thought I'd experiment, and libbonobo builds when I take out the
depends-on-libgnome line in the Portfile. Huzzah!
Looks like my problem is solved now. Onward to gnucash ;-)

That's certainly a no-no. The port's maintainer will have to remove
one of those dependencies, since circular dependencies are not allowed.
