Well well; I noticed that my MacBook had been up for 44 days, and so I
decided to apply the Universal Microsoft Solution (tm) and now everything
is working! Call me an unrealistic perfectionist, but I think that
machines should not need to be rebooted unless absolutely necessary e.g.
hardware
Another update; I'll get around to reading all the replies -- some I
suspect not very helpful -- when I finish seeing what else went wrong
after that disastrous update.
I can print a Gnuplot graph, but cannot save it; fascinating. At least I

TextEdit - as in Apple's own application
Minor update: the TextEdit file is actually saved (whew!) but hangs after
printing; Gnuplot still hangs on "File -> Save As" but I suppose I could
always do a screen-grab until this defect is fixed.
What beats me is why "About This Mac" no longer works...

Did you try to launch the binary from the terminal and see which errors it
spits out?
