There is one other thing I forgot to mention about MacUpdater < https://www.corecode.io/macupdater/>. It’s free if all you need is notification when a new update is available. You only need to pay if you want to use the app itself to update apps more than ten times. Although I could easily do

The more I think about it, there's probably not as much that MacPorts and MacUpdater can do for each other as with brew...because brew also provides procedures ("casks") for installing commercial software and/or checking for the latest version. MacPorts doesn't do that, it only installs open

As an apparent minority user of both Macports and MacUpdater as well as a former subscriber to MacUpdate Desktop, I can heartedly confirm everything you said, and add that the developer is easy to work with (I do so almost weekly) compared to those at MacUpdate. I have never had any MacPorts

MacUpdater will in a future release (probably after the very next) add excluding /Applications/MacPorts from its search for apps in need of updating, since I requested that and they're quite responsive. That should prevent people from accidentally using it
