Time machine and carbon copy cloer issues

Hi. I formatted an external drive with Mac formatting with journaling. I then attached it to my airport express, where both drives show up. Trouble is, my Time Machine backups are failing and CCC says I can't do a bootable backup on this drive because it doesn't support hfs plus formatting.
