6S Desktop not speaking

I can’t get my desktop on my 6S to speak. When I press the home key, everything goes quiet. A sighted friend said that the desktop appears on the screen, but nothing is said. I have Voice Over turned on, Seri turned on, Screen curtain turned off and Airplane mode turned off. When I’m not on
