I’ve had the same problem with VoiceOver speech going silent when using the Finder in macOS Sierra, only using later model Macs and different voices. I’ve experienced this on all three of my Macs: 2011 MacBook Air, 2011 iMac, and 2012 iMac. I use Nuance Karen as my VoiceOver voice. VoiceOver
