Numbers forever. I seem to recall that you're using a non-Apple keyboard. Is
it possible that you were not using the actual "Option" key to do the action?

Nope, Option + Return only moved the focus to the cell below. What did work was
good old F2. It then positioned the cursor to the immediate right of the last
character in the cell. but thanks for pushing me in that direction.

No. Simply arrow to the cell you wish to edit, press option-return and the
cursor is placed at the end of the information within that cell. If it was
just data, you could arrow left/right to manipulate it, or press delete to
remove portions of it. If it is a formula, then use left/right
