I wish the same worked better for gmail. Like you, I faced a large incursion of junk mail in my iCloud account. Your solution is one of several. Another good one involves the use of rules on your mail client (in my case, the mail app client found in OS X/XI/XII, etc). So far, it is proving to be a possible workable solution. And yes, when you see over 1k spams in the spam folder on gmail, you need all the help you can get.
