Mac 2 factor verification

Hi, In using 2 factor verification, I receive the code on my iPad to enter into my mac book air, os catalina, but I cannot figure out how to enter the code. There is an edit field with numbers 1 through 6, but the code often comes with 9 or 0. How do I add this code? Thanks. Patrick Come and
