The whole syncing industry regularly gets messed up by Apple software
updates. Everytime iSync gets updated changes usually subtractions of
support for phone models happens and new phone models don't get added.
One useful thing Apple might do with iSync would be to have iSync locate
known good 3rd party plug-ins for iSync and download and install those to
match a new phone model that's not supported directly by the iSync code
itself. Even if 3rd party vendors want payment, Apple certainly has
enough of everyone's information to make that possible automatically
though Apple could do so without charing any information with 3rd party
vendors and if payment arrangements were done this way Apple user's
security would be radically enhanced. All Apple would need to do would be
to pay the 3rd party vendor for the software or plug-in and make sure the
installation was a success, then Apple bills the user based on serial
number of computer that downloaded the software for the transaction. All
the 3rd party vendor knows is that Apple bought with one of its own
electronic funds transfers x amount of licenses or registration keys for
their software or plug-in each month. Apple could use an escroe account
to make this process even more bulletproof. An iSync download attempt
happens for a $$$ package so Apple notifies the user of the cost and asks
for authorization to bill their user. If granted, the bill happens and
Apple puts the amount of money in the escroe account for that vendor. If
the transaction clears, the money goes to Apple and the money Apple put in
the escroe account gets put into a payee vendor's account and at the end
of the month, Apple writes one check to that payee for all the money in
the payee vendor's account and sends it electronically with invoice
stating x number of licenses or keys purchased by Apple for this product
or plug-in. Doing all of that, Apple both preserves its customer base and
the security of its customers at the same time.
