Make sure it is a “powered” hub.
Most external drives require more power than can be provided by a passive,
non-powered hub.

knew about using the shift key with that combination to make it a quick and
dirty force shutdown.

I am a little afraid it’s the hub I am using. When it happens, I can’t force quit. I can’t get to the menu bar either. It really stops almost everything except for apps like Mail and Safari. I have to open a Mail or Safari to get to the Apple menu.Mary WardOn Feb 1, 2023, at 5:34 PM, Anders
Hi!
Thanks for that command Brad.
I haven’t noticed that before.
Bless!

Hi!
It could be the cable or the usb port on your Mac or the hard disk.

The keyboard command CMD + OPT + Escape, will open the Force Quit dialog.
Using CMD + OPT + Shift + Escape, will Force Quit the current app, or restart
Finder without opening the Force Quit dialog.
HTH.

If the drive is formatted NTFS, I recommend reformatting the drive to XFAT.
There are other options, but I like XFAT because it can be read by Windows as
well as Mac.

There is an issue with finder on and off in Ventura. If it gives the no window
message cmd-option-escape will allow you to re-launch the finder and may solve
the concern.

Thanks. This is not an older Mac, it’s a 2020 M1. SO I guess I will
disconnect all the external drives, all three of them, and restart. I
neglected to say that when the Finder stops working, I have to open a program
like Mail to shut down the computer at all, and it might take it several
There could be a number of things. The age of your Mac, the cord, or the drive
itself. If yours is an older Mac though, that is most likely the issue. Restart
your mac and then plug in the drive. When you open it, give the drive a couple
minutes to load. There could also be a formatting issue.
Hello. I bought a nice big hard disc to store books, movies, and music on. It
is connected to my Mac mini via a cable. I got messages saying that it had not
been ejected properly, though, of course, it had not been ejected at all. If I
try to go to my external drives, the finder just stops
