I see that this is availble to use thru Messages. I do not use this
kind of service much but wish to connect to a Google Tak chat friend. Is
it accessible? If not, there is Adium which I have not set up yet.

I believe so. Open Preferences in Messages, go to the Accounts tab, and add an
account. VO-left to the popup button and choose the server type, then fill in
the rest of the information.
