I am trying to access files on the family iMac using a Windows laptop. I
can't seem to connect, however, even when I enter in the correct
information.
Likewise, I cn't seem to connect form the Mac to the Windows computer to
transfer stuff.
How do I do this?

First place to look for bugs is in the sharing and permissions of the
computer you're trying to connect to. Then investigate the router
through which they all connect. I'd wonder whether FTP is the best
way to do this.

It should be okay so long as Internet Sharing is disabled. I just
log on to the Mac using the Network but again you have to have the
various permissions and sharing options set correctly or it won't work.
