Actually, I don't have that 2010 MacBook anymore. And even if I did, it
wouldn't be able to run Mojave on it anyway

Do you have any settings set for the screen and the computer to sleep after a
while?
Have you tried with other Voices?
If you haven’t tried other voices then do that first and see what happens.

Does anyone have a clue as to why voiceover stops working after a few minutes

It’s only started doing this since I updated to Mojave last night. I have to
toggle voiceover off and on, then close and open the screen before it will
start talking again. Just toggling
