Check under the Apple menu: About This Mac... and you'll see your computer's
configuration. This will tell you which version you need.
If your Mac is only 2 or 3 years old, you should be okay to download the OS X
version.

Vlc actually doesn't play windows media, but if you want to get vlc, you want
the one for intel macs. To play windows media, do a search for flip4mac, that's
the plug in you need, it's a plug in for the quick time player.
