if you want to download linked file in mail do option tab to find your link and
then option enter. it will download the file and open the manager. It might be
new in safari 5 as I don't remember the option enter worked in mail before.

Someone sent me a file through dropbox. I hit control option shift m and hit
enter on download linked file. I can see in my downloads folder that its
downloading but is there a way I can get to a download progress window in mail?

You can,
Go back to safari and press command option L to show the download manager. Now
interact with the list then interact with the group. Now vo right arrow and
you will be able to hear the progress of your download.

I believe so, but I'm not 100% sure. I say this because when I press command
option L in mail it says Apply rules. The download manager seems to only pop
up when in safari/webkit.
