I once read an article that put forth a theory for this. Consider that a great 
deal of Apple's iBooks are textbooks, and that people who read books (text or 
not) often do it while out and about, or on the couch, or at the table, or 
other places that aren't in front of their computers. Now consider what they 
will buy to do all this mobile and classroom reading: iOS devices. So, Apple 
would not want to lose part of their reading market to macbooks when people 
will go out and pick up an iPod or iPad to do their reading, selling more 
mobile devices. I'm not saying I agree with the idea, but that's how it was 
explained, and I suppose it does make a kind of sense.
