I upgraded to Mavericks, and I ran the mail upgrade that fixed some known
issues with Google.
I cannot rely on mail for my baby use if it continues to behave the way it is.
I am not getting messages to download properly. Before, they were downloading
up to September 5, 2012.

I am happy to report, just about 20 minutes after my original message, that I
have resolved my issue.
Of course, this was after hours of wondering what was wrong, but everything is
fine after I removed and added back the offending Google account.
