Once you get the cover off. Use any thing that will let you pry up the tang.
You only to need it to release. Start at the top and work your way around. You
have to remember its made of plastic and that stuff does break.

You stated that your phone wouldn't fit back into the holder. It sounds like
the otter box case is broke. Take the phone out of the case and see if it is
chipped, because takes a lot to chip a metal case.

I can’t imagine metal chipping off a persons phone is necessarily normal.
Especially since you have it in a case which limits some of the natural wear
and tare put on the device. Only thing I can think is, there was some dirt or
dust in the case that over time wore away at the metal band
