Sounds exactly like the problem I’ve been having since doing updates. Going to try the clean install of Yosemite. I had hoped to wait for Apple to release an update to Yosemite before doing the upgrade but this problem has me stumped. I only updated the app store updates. Not the Yosemite

Hello Jessica, If you just did an update to Yosemite, you should try doing a clean install of El Capitán. I’ve seen so much trouble with this update that I would discourage anyone from doing a simple update rather than a clean install. If you need instructions, I’ll post them. Cheers, Anne

OK, you’re on Mavericks. You could try resetting the PRAM. To do this, shut down your Mac. Before pressing the Power button, hold down the Command, Option, letter ‘p’ and letter ‘r’ keys, and keep them held down while you press the Power key and until you’ve heard the startup chime four times.
