Have you figured out the point of the favorites bar? I just updated to lion on
Sunday, and am using the new mail layout. I like the new layout.

In the Navigation category of VoiceOver Utility, you need to have Initial
position of VoiceOver cursor: set to Keyboard focused item. Otherwise, the VO
cursor goes to the first item which is not what you want.

I'm sorry my suggestion didn't work for you.
I have Mail set to Classic View and Conversations turned off. When I press
Return, the message is read in its entirety. If i want to activate a link, I
just press VO-Cmd-l and I'm taken to the next link which I can activate with
