Hello Ben,
Preview is the default PDF reader on the Mac. You have to go to the last item
on the screen and interact twice to be able to read the text. This is, of
course, assuming that we’re talking about a text PDF and not an image. In that
case, you need OCR which doesn’t come cheap.
I just tried to update to Fall Creators in my Windows 10 partition (via boot
camp) on my mac mini using latest high sierra and file vault, but after a
couple of restarts and getting over 32% installed, the process suddenly
restarted and said it was restoring my previous version of windows!
Oh, and because the restarts during installation were not announced, I couldn't
stop the mac mini defaulting into booting into high sierra instead of windows
and I had to unlock file vault each time. Harry

Thanks Anne , I will give that a try . I have a feeling I may have to try an
OCR app.

I use a service called “hide my ass”. HMA. It is very accessible, and price
was very fair. I paid for a whole year for just over 50 bucks. It even shows
up in your status menu. YOu can connect and disconnect instantly.
