Re: Can I stop the double-finger double-tap from playing music in iOS 16?

2023-11-24 Thread Dave Carlson
Doug,
I don’t know of any easier way to clear the playback queue. Some apps like
Blind Square use this audio channel, but when it closes, it leafes it blank.
Another messy solution…

Only answer is to use another media (audio books, podcast, YouTube

Re: Can I stop the double-finger double-tap from playing music in iOS 16?

2023-11-24 Thread Doug Lee
Kind of you to answer, and quickly indeed. I forgot the name "magic tap"
somehow, but I do know it is a
multi-function gesture.

But my actual question is, can I somehow remove from its set of active
functions the activation of the Music
app and its controls, which happens even if I have no music to play in some
cases. I don't use my phone for
music; I use other devices for that. When I think focus is in an edit field but
it's not, I know the gesture
will not activate dictation. But I'm asking how to keep the gesture, at that
time, from instead activating
Music controls, and sound if there's anything to play.

Thanks again.

Re: Can I stop the double-finger double-tap from playing music in iOS 16?

2023-11-24 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

The two finger gesture you are referring to is known as a magic tap. The reason
for this is that it does several things. It will answer or hang up a call, it
will start and stop dictation, and it will start and stop media from playing.
If you want to use it for dictation you will need to be sure the edit field,
whether a text message or an email or something else, is activated. If it isn't
and you perform the to finger double tap then that is when your media such as
music will start playing.

I hope that helps,

Gabe

Can I stop the double-finger double-tap from playing music in iOS 16?

2023-11-24 Thread Doug Lee
I am using iOS 16 because I have an iPhone X, but I think what follows also
applies to iOS 17.

As of an update or few ago, there is a sequence I commonly perform which
results in surprise music; so I am
wanting to know how to stop the double-finger double-tap from starting music
playback. I have two reasons:
First of course to avoid startling myself and sometimes interfering with
dictation that I was actually trying
to start. Also though, I don't want the music controls on my lock screen, as
clearing them requires me to
launch and then close the Music app. These controls appear on my lock screen
even if there is no music to
play, so just clearing my library will not fully solve this problem.

The sequence that bites me so often, for anyone curious:
* Open iMessage and activate a specific conversation.
* Move to and double-tap the typing area. Focus should land in it but now often
then moves immediately to the
  last message.
* Do a double-finger double-tap to start receiving dictation speech, assuming
focus is where I put it. When
it's not, I get the surprise.

Any info most welcome.

Side button behaviors in iOS 17

2023-11-24 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
[Reposting, as the following reply didn't make it to the list - I
probably forgot the reply-to-all.]

I’m just describing how Apple works. As I understand it, their attitude
has long been that they design the user interface as they want it to be,
to provide the experience they think best, and your only options are to
accept it or to choose something else.

It isn’t like Linux, where you have much more choice (e.g., different
desktop environments with different user interfaces). They’re just two
totally different approaches to software design.

Jason.

It's really not even necessary to create a map. You can normally just shut off

Re: on screen keyboard

2023-11-24 Thread Thuy Mallalieu
Hi Gabe. I'm having the same problems as you. The only way to make the onscreen keyboard visible is to use either external keyboard or Braille Display and the space with dots 1 4 6 a couple of times to toggle to onscreen keyboard visible. I was looking in the voiceover commands list to see if I could assign a gesture to make keyboard visible but the only way I could see was through the Braille commands. It was here that I found some strange anomalies. Listed in my Braille devices was my Sony WH1000 headphones. Sure enough the show/hide onscreen keyboard command was there in the list of available commands but nothing assigned to it. I'm wondering whether you may have paired something like those headphones which could be sending some kind of command to voiceover to hide the keyboard? I just removed it from my bluetooth devices and will see if that sorts out the problem. Very annoying as I quite like the sound of those headphones. Quite why they should show up as a Braille device is a bit of a mystery to me though? Let's hope that resolves things.CheersThuyOn 24 Nov 2023, at 04:50, Gabe Griffith wrote:Hi, Sorry if I was confusing. I'm talking about that when I activate the edit field I can type using braille screen input but the onscreen keyboard is often hidden. This causes issues because if I'm in Safari trying to get to a web page for example I can type the web address but since there is no keyboard the go button doesn't show up. If I'm in an app that has some kind of search type button that doesn't appear because the keyboard is hidden. I hope that helps clarify the issue. Gabe Gabe Griffith President, California Council of the Blind (925)222-5762gabe.griff...@ccbnet.orgOn Nov 23, 2023, at 8:39 PM, Dave Carlson wrote:Dave,Confused. Why or where is it necessary to have the on screen keyboard show when there is no active edit field? Not sure I understand.

I Thought it might be an iOS 17 thing or have to do with my having a couple of different braille displays connected but my fiance just got a new 14 Pro yesterday and is occasionally having the same issue and she most definitely doesn't have any keyboards or braille displays connected to her phone Does anyone have any thoughts on what would cause this and how to get the keyboard to show up? I generally use braille screen input so can get around it when typing but it makes things quite difficult for things like getting to a web site or performing a product search in apps.
