Authentication Busy, Busy, Busy

2016-10-12 Thread Sharon Hooley
Hi,

Maybe this has been addressed before, but I hope you don't mind.

I recently updated my Mac Air to Siera, and was able to enter my username and
password. But the system was unable to unlock my Icloud Keychain. So I got
the choice to update, create new, or go on with the login. I do want to update
it, so I selected that. But now, as far as I know, authentication is busy. Is
there anything I can do, or should I turn off the machine, turn it back on,
log-in, then do something else?

Thanks,

Sharon H.

Dito for my Siri. I try not to have one command do more than needed.

It is snappier to have Seri on FN + space anyway.

This is good. I would just like to say that I switched my command for Siri. I
switched to FN Space instead of Command Space. I did this because Command

One. I have installed Sierra over the top of my Yosemite OS.
Two. I have backed up my machine.
Three. I will boot into the recovery mode and, using disk utility, I will
erase and reformat the "Macintosh HD" partition using Mack OS extended
 journaled as the disk format.
Four. I will quit disk utility, and still in the recovery mode, select
reinstall OS, And follow the install prompts.
Five. I will reinstall Dropbox and other apps, and reset system settings
 to my liking.
The overlay of Sierra on top of Yosemite actually works quite well, and
seems to be without problems, except that the machine seems to heat up
more than it used to. Also, I have never done a clean install since I got
this air with the lion OS and so thought it might be a good idea to do a
 clean install for once.

Re: Reading kindle books on Mac OS or converting to other formats

Good luck.

The removal tool is a bit illogical and has unlabeled buttons but
once those 3 are labeled, its not too bad.

Adding file is a typical process. Once I learned that the .azw file
is the file to work with, it was simple enough to select that and
convert it.

What I am running into is the Kindle wizard. It should not be
popping up since I bought only 2 books so far, directly from Amazon.
The wizard deals with content that comes from other sources so should
not apply. I cannot do the 2nd book. When I retyrn to the app, the
status for the 2nd book shows "information is incoeect". Dismissing
the wizard gets me nowhere.

I can open and close either book in the Kindle for Mac app and both
are in the library folder. Will keep working on this.

Handling Kindle Books On The Mac

This guide is not designed to assist the braking of copyright law. Users
must take responsibility for their own actions and conscience. It is not
for the faint hearterd either. Difficulty = medium to hard.

Download the following:
Kindle for Mac (This is for the UK store) So by default, the store is
set to amazon.co.uk >. This setting is difficult to
change so download from your country to save you the bother.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201246110

From memory, I tapped the tab key twice, then hit enter which forced the
authorisation wizard to put the focus in the password field. Then I
typed in my password then hit enter. Do these steps very slowly. I have
a fast Mac but this wizard is very sluggish. Use VO B to read the dialog
box. You’ll get very little speech out of it. You will know if you have
been successful because it will present the opening screen which you can
VO arrow left and right.

Then download Kindle DRM Removal. This looks different site but I’m sure
this is the right one.

http://kindle-drm-removal-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download

This will find the Kindle books that have been pulled down on to the
Mac. It will create it’s own directory to store DRM removed files. I
find the selection of books frustrating . You need to interact with the
toolbar and click on the open files button. Which brings up a typical
finder window and it’s difficult to know which book is which.

Now download Calibre:
https://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
For this you might want to manipulate the path variable. As the command
line tools are hidden in your Applications directory. Mine is:

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/ebook-convert

Don’t forget auto tab completion. So on the command line something like:

ebook-convert My_Recipe_Book.azw3 .rtf

Will generate My_Recipe_Book.rtf

Here’s the help file:

Usage: ebook-convert input_file output_file [options]

Convert an ebook from one format to another.

input_file is the input and output_file is the output. Both must be
specified as the first two arguments to the command.

The output ebook format is guessed from the file extension of
output_file. output_file can also be of the special format .EXT where
EXT is the output file extension. In this case, the name of the output
file is derived from the name of the input file. Note that the filenames
must not start with a hyphen. Finally, if output_file has no extension,
then it is treated as a directory and an "open ebook" (OEB) consisting
of HTML files is written to that directory. These files are the files
that would normally have been passed to the output plugin.

After specifying the input and output file you can customize the
conversion by specifying various options. The available options depend
on the input and output file types. To get help on them specify the
input and output file and then use the -h option.

For full documentation of the conversion system see
https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/conversion.html

Whenever you pass arguments to ebook-convert that have spaces in them,
enclose the arguments in quotation marks. For example "C:\some path with
spaces"

Apple music on the Mac with Siri

2016-10-12 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
I haven’t seen this addressed recently, but in case you haven’t tried or didn’t
know, Siri will play music in iTunes for Apple Music subscribers.

simply hold down Command space and say “play” song title, or “play” artist
after the tone.

I’ve experienced having to say the command a bit slow for it to hear me well.

You can then skip, repeat, Play, pause, and shuffle with the same key commands
for media play using the function keys s through 12 in combination with the fn
key.

Enjoy,

Antonio

Using Audacity when totally blind

2016-10-12 Thread Bill Gallik
All,

I am asking for some advice trying to use Audacity on my Mac. I am trying to
cut out a 5.23 second snippet of an audio file but am having difficulty trying
to get those start and links fields appropriately filled in. Can anybody offer
me any suggestions?

I was hoping that I could simply enter act with the text fields and fill in the
numbers as appropriate. This is proving to be extremely difficult!

Re: Reading kindle books on Mac OS or converting to other formats

2016-10-12 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

I don’t remember running into the kindle wizard myself. What are the steps you
take to run the kindle wizard? Then don’t do those steps again.

I did give an example of a kindle extension. So anything looking like .azw is
the file you need to point to. I have seen .mobi and .html files too.

Good luck.

Nasty mail issue solved!

2016-10-12 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hallelujah, hallelujah, finally!!! As far as I can tell, the problem is solved.

I went into mail preferences > accounts > mailbox behaviours, and change the
Google trash folder to none. The archive folder is set to all mail, so that is
good. I tested this set up by deleting some mail that I do not care about, and
all seems to be working fine.

Tim you should be fine as I think the Express version will continue to work

Hi,

Check your settings in Mail Preferences, Accounts, Mailbox Behaviours. Under
the Trash section, make sure it's set to "None", to delete messages
"Automatically" and that the Archive messages is set to go to gMail - AllMail.
See if that improves things. I'm having no issues here.

Any ideas? It didn’t use to be like this. BTW, mine is gMail iMap as well.

Re: Abby Fine Reader not recognizing scanner

2016-10-12 Thread E.T.
Its not ridiculous, its business. We all would love to pay a one
time fee and get a lifetime of free upgrades. If we worry about the off
chance that at some point we will have to pay for an upgrade, we would
still be using MS DOS.

No, they do not MAKE a version incompatible with new OS upgrades so
they can collect upgrade fees. That is faulty thinking.

Re: Nasty issue in Mail

2016-10-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Scott is correct. gMail accounts do not normally send deleted messages to the
Trash Mailbox unless you specifically tell them to. My question is, does the
message that you delete get removed from the InBox, but just is not present in
your Trash Mailbox? If so, it will be in the Archived Mailbox. You can set
the behaviour to place a copy in your Trash if you like in Mail Prefs. In the
past though, this caused some sync problems with Google's Mail servers. This
issue may have been fixed, but I'm not sure.

Hi Brandt, I could be wrong here but doesn’t gmail not actually delete but
archives instead?

I’m not sure here so take anything I say on this subject with the appropriate
grains of salt but I do think gmail behaves differently than traditional mail
servers.

Hi there folks,

I find that when hitting delete on an email message in the inbox, said message

More background info, it is in a gmail account, iMap.

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Scott Granados
If he joins the Wifi it will carry over to the recovery partition. Also, you
can get to that screen with voice over by pressing vo m twice, arrowing twice
and then down. This has worked for me as recently as a week ago when fresh
installing on a 2011 MacBook Pro. However, if he already is joined to WiFi
before the fresh install it should persist.

Let me know if you disagree I think I understood the issue correctly.

Thanks

Re: How do I download the latest OS update for my mac?

2016-10-12 Thread christopher hallsworth
1. Open the App Store from either the Apple menu or the dock.

2. The link for Sierra should be right on the home page of the App Store. So
click on that.

3. Click the download button.

4. If prompted for your Apple ID, enter the appropriate credentials. It should
then begin downloading.

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi there,

I see only one issue with your steps. Unless you have either some sight or are
pare of eyes to borrow, installing the OS is going to be very hard. The air
does not have an ethernet port, and the wi-Fi network selection screens do not
talk.

The best workaround I can think of in your case, is to build a USB installation
disk.

This is not too hard, the steps is as follows.

Begin by downloading the installer directly from the App store.
It will automatically launch the Installer. Go ahead and close that and insert
your USB drive into your Mac.
Open up the Disk Utility app and rename the USB drive to “SierraInstaller.
I would also recommend formatting the above mentioned USB drive to Mac OS
Extended journal, with a GUID partition scheme.
Open the terminal app and copy and paste the following code and press enter:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\
Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
/Volumes/SierraInstaller --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\
Sierra.app --nointeraction & Done

I have taken the above steps off a website, so if there is any errors, replace
all \ characters with /

Remember, you are using Sudo, so your mac will ask for your password.

Once everything is complete, you should have a bootable USB drive that contains
the build of macOS Sierra you downloaded. Go ahead and reboot your computer and
hold down the Option key with C.
That is all there is to it!

Hi,

Yes, Express is working for me with Sierra. The difference, though, is that
I've not ever used it with a scanner, so can't properly comment on that part of
things. Usually, people have just sent me scanned documents, and I OCR them.

Clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello everyone.

I plan to do a clean install of Sierra, just to see if there are any issues my
girlfriend may experience if she does it on her own. For now though, are you
aware of any? I see no issues when updating from El Capitan or the GM (Golden
Master), but never done a clean install. Any responses greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Yep. I restored apps from TM and the next day redid the clean
install, this time only restoring computer and settings from TM via
Migration Assistant. Manually installing apps and registering a very few

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Phil Halton
That's exactly right, it was my understanding that reinstalling from a time
machine back up would only reinstall whatever problems you were trying to get
away from to begin with. I've never done a clean install since lion OS X and
that's why am doing this now.

I’ve had no problems with my HP8500. I just checked it out to be sure. I’d

Re: Adding ports to airport express.

2016-10-12 Thread Scott Granados
Anders, let me ask some questions here.

The head end router is in bridge mode, does each airport have a public IP or
where is the address translation taking place? Where you’re doing the NAT is
where you want to have the port forwarding enabled. Does that make sense?

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

You can but you reinstall any difficulties you were having previously. Not a
bad solution but not the perfect clean sweep I think Phil is looking for.

Phil, this sounds like a sound procedure to me. No need to reauthorize as
your computer will identify itself with the same identification again.

You should be good to go.

Adding ports to airport express.

2016-10-12 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I have some difficulties getting ssh to work from my Linux box to my Mac mini.
This has worked before but i guess that port 22 is blocked on all my network
devices.
I have a Compal router or modem which is in bridging mode.
This is connected to an airport express via ethernet cable.
he airport express hosts one airport extreme and another airport express.
They are connected via wifi.
On my airport devices i have set them to dhcp and nat.
I have done that to all of the devices.
So what i am wondering is if i allow port 22 on the airport express connected
to the compal modem do i have to allow the ports to be opened on the other
airport devices to or does the airport utility fix this?
Hope you understand this.
/A

Abby Fine Reader not recognizing scanner

2016-10-12 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Since installing Sierra I have not been able to get Abby Fine Reader to work. I
have done my research on this issue and it looks like Abby is not recognizing
my scanner as it is only giving me the option to read from file, no Twain
driver option. Does anyone know how to fix this as Abby Fine Reader customer
service is impossible to get on the phone and Canon was useless. Thanks,

Re: Reading kindle books on Mac OS or converting to other formats

2016-10-12 Thread E.T.

   Another update on this process...

The
wizard deals with content that comes from other sources so should not
apply. I cannot do the 2nd book. When I retyrn to the app, the status
for the 2nd book shows "information is incoeect". Dismissing the wizard
gets me nowhere.

Kindle for Mac (This is for the UK store) So by default, the store is
set to amazon.co.uk . This setting is difficult to
change so download from your country to save you the bother.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201246110

From memory, I tapped the tab key twice, then hit enter which forced the
authorisation wizard to put the focus in the password field. Then I
typed in my password then hit enter. Do these steps very slowly. I have
a fast Mac but this wizard is very sluggish. Use VO B to read the dialog
box. You’ll get very little speech out of it. You will know if you have
been successful because it will present the opening screen which you can
VO arrow left and right.

Then download Kindle DRM Removal. This looks different site but I’m sure
this is the right one.

http://kindle-drm-removal-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download

This will find the Kindle books that have been pulled down on to the
Mac. It will create it’s own directory to store DRM removed files. I
find the selection of books frustrating . You need to interact with the
toolbar and click on the open files button. Which brings up a typical
finder window and it’s difficult to know which book is which.

Now download Calibre:
https://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
For this you might want to manipulate the path variable. As the command
line tools are hidden in your Applications directory. Mine is:

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/ebook-convert

Don’t forget auto tab completion. So on the command line something like:

ebook-convert My_Recipe_Book.azw3 .rtf

Will generate My_Recipe_Book.rtf

Here’s the help file:

Usage: ebook-convert input_file output_file [options]

Convert an ebook from one format to another.

input_file is the input and output_file is the output. Both must be
specified as the first two arguments to the command.

The output ebook format is guessed from the file extension of
output_file. output_file can also be of the special format .EXT where
EXT is the output file extension. In this case, the name of the output
file is derived from the name of the input file. Note that the filenames
must not start with a hyphen. Finally, if output_file has no extension,
then it is treated as a directory and an "open ebook" (OEB) consisting
of HTML files is written to that directory. These files are the files
that would normally have been passed to the output plugin.

After specifying the input and output file you can customize the
conversion by specifying various options. The available options depend
on the input and output file types. To get help on them specify the
input and output file and then use the -h option.

For full documentation of the conversion system see
https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/conversion.html

Whenever you pass arguments to ebook-convert that have spaces in them,
enclose the arguments in quotation marks. For example "C:\some path with
spaces"

Options:
--version show program's version number and exit

-h, --help show this help message and exit

--list-recipes List builtin recipe names. You can create an ebook from a
builtin recipe like this: ebook-convert "Recipe
Name.recipe"
  output.epub

He could, but he said he wanted a clean install. If you want to reinstall from
a backup, you wouldn't need to format the drive, because time machine would

After you reformat the drive, can’t you restore from the time machine backup?
This should eliminate the need to reinstall applications and files.

Re: iMud (an accessible macOS MUD/MUSH client)

2016-10-12 Thread Tyler Thompson
For anybody who wants to try dentinmud.org port 3000
might be a good place to start. As far as what iMud currently offers over
telnet Devin pretty much hit the nail on the head, sound support is a big
feature. iMud also has both a custom scripting language and mildly supports Lua
as a scripting language so that you can automate some features. So triggers,
timers, delays, aliases, variables (macros coming soon)

Some minor details exist now to that you may or may not like, for example you
can log output from the MUD with a timestamp, you can have custom aliases, you
can gag (or simply not display) certain spammy/repeated text.

There’s a lot of features planned down the road, some are certainly
accessibility based some are merely useful but I don’t want to promise and then
not deliver so I’ll keep quiet for now.

Oh! Last thing, iMud supports several MUD protocols already (MSP, MSDP
(mildly), MSSP, MCCP(soon), GMCP(soon)) those protocols are used by both iMud
and the MUD server, which means using only telnet you’re actually missing out
on features that the game wants to try and supply (MCCP for example is a
compression protocol good for slow connections)

For those of you testing this out just remember, it’s in beta :) (to start iMud
accessibility type OPTION+COMMAND+A)

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Blee Blat
That looks sane, just be careful that you don't accidentally erase the
recovery partition, just erase the HD volume. If you erase the recovery
partition, it will drop you into internet recovery and you'll then have to
start with the OS the machine came with before you upgrade to Sierra again and
that would not be fun.

Thanks Scott.
I thought it was downloading but apparently not.
I’ll start over and pay closer attention.

My plan for a clean install of Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Phil Halton
These are the steps I intend to follow to do a clean install of Sierra on my
MacBook Air. If anyone sees a problem in these steps would you please let me
know? For example, is it necessary to first D authorize my computer in iTunes
to avoid problems

One. I have installed Sierra over the top of my Yosemite OS.
Two. I have backed up my machine.
Three. I will boot into the recovery mode and, using disk utility, I will erase
and reformat the "Macintosh HD" partition using Mack OS extended journaled as
the disk format.
Four. I will quit disk utility, and still in the recovery mode, select
reinstall OS, And follow the install prompts.
Five. I will reinstall Dropbox and other apps, and reset system settings to my
liking.
The overlay of Sierra on top of Yosemite actually works quite well, and seems
to be without problems, except that the machine seems to heat up more than it
used to. Also, I have never done a clean install since I got this air with the
lion OS and so thought it might be a good idea to do a clean install for once.

Re: How do I download the latest OS update for my mac?

2016-10-12 Thread Scott Granados
If you’re using the regular version and non beta which I assume do the
following.

First, backup your machine. Use time machine to do this either with a
removable disk or with a network attached disk. If you don’t have the means to
do that then at a minimum back up your critical files like images, documents
and so forth to external storage. Either way make sure your critical info is
stored elsewhere for the upgrade.

Go to your app store and enter in Sierra in the search box, or alternately look
under the featured apps and select sierra. Quick on download / install and
wait for the file to download. Once it downloads y you’ll be prompted to
install. Follow the prompts. You’ll have to periodically turn voice over back
on with a command F5 as things restart and so forth but that’s fine if voice
stops just click command F5 until you hear voice over on. Follow the prompts,
and once done you’ll be upgraded. The key is to just follow the directions the
installer issues and you should be good to go.

Good luck.

Re: iMud (an accessible macOS MUD/MUSH client)

2016-10-12 Thread Devin Prater
They offer a way better experience than with Terminal, sound support, and,
well, a GUI. Probably a lot more, but that's what I like. I'm taking my poor
Mac to the Apple store today to get Sierra installed. I messed with Linux,
didn't like it, and now... Anyways, when I get Mac os again, I'll surely give
this a try. Also, I have been wanting to learn to code, so yes, being able to
help with this would be amazing. My Mac currently only has 4 gigs of Ram and a
spinning drive, so Xcode is rather cumbersome on there, although I could use
Emacs and the Swift mode along with the compile terminal function if necessary.
While I'm there, I might see about upgrading the Mac's internals so that I can
have a better experience.

So what worked for me was John’s excellent suggestion of going to the previous
recipients window and clearing everything from there.

Seemed to be the easiest way to resolve the problem and it worked.

There might be another folder in to which those voices need to be put. Bear in

RE: question about a scrambled address book like effect in Apple mail

2016-10-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Scott,

I know you can rebuild a mailbox database,

Can you not do the same thing with an address book database?

I can't say I've looked but possibly a feature like that.

Subject: question about a scrambled address book like effect in Apple mail

Hi, let me describe this problem as best I can.

I have Apple mail running under the OS10.1 beta presently but this problem has
existed to one degree or another since at least IOS 9 including the latest El
Cap.

When entering in an address there’s an auto complete feature so for example if
I start to type mac the mac visionaries list appears and completes. This is
fine. However, I’ve had this on for years between versions as well as several
address books which in general seem to be synchronizing ok. The problem is if
I write an address it might come up with the entirely wrong rewrite. I might
put in mikespizza and bobs-BurgerTown will appear in the field. Seems like
there’s either to much data and it’s making crazy relationships or the database
needs a refresh. This problem seems unique to Apple mail. Is there a way to
clear that autocompletion database? If it’s not that simple how do I find the
source of the conflicts?

Thanks in advance

Scott
