Switching Between Mac and Windows

2018-02-14 Thread E.T.
Windows 7 VM under Fusion. I need to switch between applications on
both platforms to compare data. I cannot navigate in the Windows app in
either single or unity view. I had to stop for now but wonder if this
will work in full screen mode. I have been having trouble with getting
dumped out of the VM, perhaps hitting a wrong key. What is the secret
for this? Thanks.

Re: 3-Finger Quadruple Tap

2018-02-14 Thread Bill Gallik
Hi David,

I had indeed instructed her to set the rotor to “Words” and when the code was
spoken to use the gesture. The problem there is that the code is wrapped to
the next line so only the initial 8 or so characters were able to be placed in
the paste-board in this manner. She does have screen orientation locked in
“Portrait.” I assume, although I am not certain, that if she unlocked screen
orientation that the mail app would display in landscape so your suggestion
would work nicely. I had suggested doing this, but she wasn’t very keen on
that approach neither.

Thanks!

Re: 3-Finger Quadruple Tap

2018-02-14 Thread Bill Gallik
I appreciate the responses to this inquiry, but that procedure is terribly
inconvenient. It would be helpful if Apple were able to offer a toggle to
silence the inclusion of element labels so this gesture could copy only the
desired information into the paste-board.

Now, I fully understand that this likely will not happen. Software design,
implementation and testing activity would probably prove too costly, but one
can always dream; right?

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
We decided to return our Home Pod for now. We are waiting for it to, hopefully,
interface with our Sonos home theatre setup. That said, Home Pod definitely
sets timers and alarms. It will say what the upcoming appointments on the
calendar are. Unfortunately, this is currently only for one user.

Apple Music is not necessary. One can either place music in one's iCloud
account, or purchase Apple Music Match and Home Pod will play said music. No
matter how loud the volume is set, the mic is excellent. I never needed to
raise my voice. And, the unit was able to understand me when I was in rooms
near the lounge where we had the speaker.

The rumour is that Home Pod should interface with Sonos systems when AirPlay II
comes out. As Apple will most likely not raise the price of Home Pod, we
decided to wait until it meets our use case before purchasing.

Kind regards,

David Chittenden, MSc, MRCAA

Hello listers,

I have a 1t mac hardrive which I split into two partitions.

With the first partition containing the os and other data is the data stored

How is this os location affected if there are multiple platters?

HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring, The Verge

2018-02-14 Thread M. Taylor
HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring
By Chaim Gartenberg

Apple's HomePod is a great sounding but ideologically flawed speaker, and it
turns out there's another major problem with the smart speaker aside from
its lack of support for Spotify. Apparently the silicone base of the HomePod
can damage wooden furniture, with multiple outlets (including Wirecutter and
Pocket Lint) reporting that leaving the speaker on top of wooden surfaces
can cause a white ring to form.

Apple has confirmed the issue to Wirecutter, stating that "the marks can
improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood
surface," with the company also recommending that users "try cleaning the
surface with the manufacturer's suggested oiling method" if the white rings
don't fade.

Given that HomePods aren't meant to be put on a soft surface (the tweeters
fire down, so putting it on cloth messes with the reflectivity of the
sound), it's not the sort of problem you can solve by just putting down a
cloth underneath it, either.

Congratulations to everyone on their beautiful HomePods and sorry it
secretes a deadly acid that destroys your furniture
https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/apple-homepod/?utm_source=twitter_medi
um=social_campaign=social-promo#homepods-flaws-but-not-dealbreakers-home
pod-vs-echo-vs-google-home-max-vs-sonos-one .

Apple has also updated its official support page for the HomePod, explaining
that "It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone
base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces." According to
the support page, the marks are apparently caused by "oils diffusing between
the silicone base and the table surface." In addition to the previous stated
advice about hoping the marks go away or cleaning the surface, Apple also
said for customers who are concerned about the issue, "We recommend placing
your HomePod on a different surface."

Update February 14th, 4:00pm: Added additional information about placing the
HomePod on soft surfaces. Updated post to reflect new information from
Apple's official support page for the HomePod.

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-14 Thread Alex Hall
I'm waiting for, at the very least, the software to improve. I want more smarts
and less audio perfection, so I need Siri to at least handle multiple users'
accounts and do things like calendars and named timers.

As to the audio jack, I very much doubt it will ever happen. This speaker is
meant to blend into the background, and interact with wireless streaming and
speech input/output. In my mind, it will never include an audio jack. But Apple
could do anything, so don't take my word for it.

I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I was really considering buying a HOmePod. However, as I am not subscribed
to Apple Music nor am I going to subscribe anytime soon, I was hoping that
the HomePod would have a 3.5mm jack so that I could use it with non-apple
and/or legacy hardware devices such as my iPod Nanno. What a bummer that it
does not have such a port.

Perhaps I'll wait until the next generation model in hopes that they will
permit legacy-device attachments.

Thoughts?

Re: 3-Finger Quadruple Tap

2018-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
If the code is a complete word, set the rotor to words and vertically flick to
the word. When spoken by VO, use the three-finger quadrouple tap to copy the
word. Also, when in an active text field, one can move VO to the start or end
of the text, then turn the rotor to select and select (highlight) the desired
text. Then, turn the rotor to edit and vertical flick to copy, and double-tap.

Re: calendars, time zones time changes etc

2018-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
Hi,

I do this regularly in my calendar app on my iPhone.

Whilst creating a new appointment:
double-tap on the start date/time field. The first field is the date selector.
The second field is hours selector. The third field is minutes selector. I use
24 hour time, so I do not have an AM/PM selector. The last field is the
timezone. Double-tap on this field. Double-tap on the clear button. Type the
name of the city in the search field, then right-flick through the suggestions.
Double-tap on the correct city and the timezone will be set for the start time
of the appointment. Now, the appointment will always reflect the correct local
time, even when one travels.

I use the calendar to schedule flights across timezones, and this is tracked
correctly as well. To do so, after filling out the start time including the
timezone field, fill out the end time including the timezone field for the
destination, and the calendar will track and show both times converted to the
local timezone. The nonconverted times can be checked in the appointment.

In my opinion, the native calendar app on iOS is quite powerful.

calendars, time zones time changes etc

2018-02-14 Thread jean parker
Hi Tim and All:

Sorry, I didn’t clarify the most fundamental thing. I use my calendar on my
iphone and not my computer.

What you explained makes sense but I need it to work on my i phone.

Thanks,

Apple mail and yahoo signin key does this work?

2018-02-14 Thread matthew dyer
Hello all,

I have a yahoo account which I want to use with apple mail. Here is the
question. Yahoo has an opsion for sign in key which allows you to have a code
sent to your phone and this sounds similar to 2 factor authentication. Has
anyone used this and no if this works with email clients like mail for example?
 Thanks.

Re: 3-Finger Quadruple Tap

2018-02-14 Thread John JD Denning
Hi, what are you do is either delete anything extra after I paste it. Or if
that doesn’t work for some reason I’ll go through the extra step of first
pasting it into just a note, so I have a text, and then delete the extra
characters there, and then re-copy just what I want.

I don’t think there’s any other way to do it.

Re: calendars, time zones time changes etc

2018-02-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In Calendar Preferences, under the Advanced tab, make sure that the Enable Time
Zone Support is checked. When this is checked, when you set a time for a
specific event, there's also a Time Zone option you can modify. So, for
example, you could set an event for 10 am EST on your calendar when you are in
PST time. If you combine this action with setting the Time Zone of your
computer, it should automatically make the changes for you. Setting the Time
Zone of your computer can be done manually, or it can be set automatically
according to your current location. So, in System Preferences, in the Date &
Time pane, under the Time Zone tab, if the checkbox is checked to Set Time
Automatically by Location, then your Mac will determine its location and set
the Time Zone accordingly. The caveat here is that you need to make sure that
Location Services is enable for your Mac. With both of these items enabled,
what you're hoping for should be accomplished in that if you've set the event
for 10 am EST while you were at home in a different Time Zone such as MST, when
you travel to New York in EST for the event, all times should properly be
managed.

I hope this makes some sort of sense. I'm not sure if it does to me, but it's
the best my brain could word this morning :)/

Re: PDFReaderPro Free - How Do You ...

2018-02-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

According to the product info page in the App Store, it does not include OCR.
It appears to be a good pdf reader app, but in my experience, if you wish to
have OCR functionality, it will cost more than $10 to $20. PDFPen does include
this, but is around the $100 mark and there are likely others, but I know that
PDFPen is accessible and does the trick. The Mac version is very accessible,
although the iOS version is not as accessible from a VO prospective.
