RE: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread Simon A Fogarty
By default boot camp sets the windows partition at approx. 40 gig

I then using the slider change my windows partition to allow for apps and
everything else to be installed so I set the win partition to approx. 50% of
the available size.

Also it being a partition which will not shrink or expand as needed, you
need to plan ahead. VMware Fusion on the other hand creates a folder in
Documents so total disk space that macOS includes both. But if you use Time
Machine you need to exclude that folder for it will backup the whole folder
every time you do something in Windows.

Another Boot Camp question: To run Windows, do you need to shut down Mac OS and
then launch Windows from the log on greeting section? Or can you switch

RE: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread kelly
Hi Jason,

It is fairly straight forward for the braille display. VMWare allows you to
determine where a connected device should go, ie. Mac or Windows and you can
change this. I’d say it isn’t the sort of thing that you can just flip each
time you move between the virtual environment and Mac but if you are going to
be working in one environment for more than a bit, you just change the option.

As far as the license, when you use VMWare’s easy installer, there is an option
to enter a product key. You can also skip that option and still pick what
version of Windows you want to install such as Home or Professional. If you
skip the product key during install, it is no different from doing so during a
full Windows installation. There are options within Windows for activation
after the OS is fully installed.

How are braille displays handled when using a virtual machine under Mac OS? Can
you easily change which operating system is controlling the braille display?

Also, as a side question, with either a virtual machine or Bootcamp, how is the
Windows license obtained? Do you purchase it somewhere and enter a product key?

I’ve read somewhere that Linux won’t run on newer Mac systems that have the T2
security chip, so having all three operating systems installed together may not
be viable, unless you’re using virtual machines of course.

My personal solution is to have a Lenovo laptop that runs both Windows and
Linux, and a Mac that is just for Mac OS. This isn’t ideal, and I may
reconsider if and when I upgrade my Mac.

I’ve been using VMware Fusion for quite some time now, too, and I’m happy, as
you are, being able to simply toggle between the two OS’s with out rebooting. I
read the short article you talked about, and I am interested in learning more

RE: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread kelly
Hi Pete,

I made these key assignments under the general preferences in the keyboard
settings. There are several keyboard profiles. I modified the existing
Windows 10 profile.

In my case I assigned the key to the left of the 1 key on the keyboard to be
caps lock. I also assigned ctrl+back slash to what Fusion called menu. This
is the equivalent of the application or context key on the keyboard.

Right now the computer I’m using is actually running Windows in Boot Camp so
I’m not able to give the exact steps from memory of making the key assignments.
There are from and to fields and options on both if you want modifiers. If
you try this and run into an issue let me know.

For all, one other thing I like about Fusion is actually using the program as
the name implies in Fusion mode. When you choose that option from the View
menu, your Mac and Windows apps are all available when you use Command+tab to
switch apps on the Mac. For me this works great and the Windows screen reader
kicks in each time you are in a Windows window.

Re: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries

read the short article you talked about, and I am interested in learning more
about how you were able to map the context menu key. Which preferences do you
go into, is it the main VMWare preferences or the settings for the individual

Thanks for any help,

Hi,

You can definitely install Boot Camp without sighted assistance and then
Windows also. When you run the Boot Camp program from the Mac side, it prompts
you for all the details so you can use VoiceOver. When the machine boots into
Windows, you can load Narrator to finish install.

In theory Narrator should start speaking with the default Mac speakers. But I
will say that on at least one computer I did have to plug in a USB audio
device to get speech during OS install. I keep a basic USB audio device around
for these kinds of situations. I have configured three different Macs for Boot
Camp.

That said, I would personally go with either VMWare or Virtual Box first. I
use both successfully on my Mac and am really coming to like using VMWare
fusion. I dealt with the caps lock keyboard issue in that program by using
their keyboard assignment feature in preferences and just assigned a different
key to be my caps lock key. I wrote a bit more on that at
http://theideaplace.net/a-short-update-on-virtual-machines-to-include-an-apple-mac/.

I have also had good success with Boot Camp to be clear. I’m preparing for
some extended travel and want to reduce the hardware I need so have been
ensuring I can use both Boot Camp and virtual machines from within the Mac OS.

I have to say whatever Apple did in their latest audio driver for Boot Camp
under Windows is working perfectly here. Speech is back to being crisp,
responsive and no dropping with several screen readers.

Hi,

I am curious if anyone else has noticed an improvement with the audio when

screen readers. I’m not sure when the updated drivers and such were released
but when I ran Windows on my Mac this morning there were updates from Apple.

iMessages on the iPhone

2019-12-24 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
This morning I wanted to send a group iMessage to all of my family members that
have iPhones. Last year I was able to open a new message, double tap on the Add
contacts button, go down the list and select each person in my contact list
that I wanted to message and it was done. If the person had more than one
number it would let me tidy it up after I’d selected each person. This morning
I opened the new message and tapped on the add contact button, selected the
first person and it closed my contacts and went back to the message. I had to
double tap the add contact button each time I wanted to add someone. This is a
lot slower and not sure if it is intentional or if it is a bug?
Hope you all have a happy Christmas and fun new year.

Also it being a partition which will not shrink or expand as needed,
you need to plan ahead. VMware Fusion on the other hand creates a folder
in Documents so total disk space that macOS includes both. But if you
use Time Machine you need to exclude that folder for it will backup the
whole folder every time you do something in Windows.

Re: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Dave,
NO, BootCamp is a separate boot for Windows. If you want to switch between
Windows and Mac without shutting down you should use VMWare Fusion. With
VMWare, you can even specify that a certain file type should be opened by a
Windows application and if you open that file type on your Mac, Fusion will
start Windows and then start the appropriate program. There are also lots of
options to make parts of your Mac disk available to Windows. I personally have
things set up so that my Documents and Downloads are shared between Windows and
Mac so my Windows documents are in z:\Documents.

RE: Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread kelly

Audio Improvement With Boot Camp

2019-12-24 Thread kelly
Hi,

I am curious if anyone else has noticed an improvement with the audio when
running Windows under Boot Camp. With the most recent update, the issue of
missing the first syllable of speech is so far gone for me with the
different screen readers. I'm not sure when the updated drivers and such
were released but when I ran Windows on my Mac this morning there were
updates from Apple.

My first Mac Question after 3 years!

2019-12-24 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

I have just acquired a 13 inch MacBook Pro due to unforeseen circumstances and
I am visiting iCloud.com where I thought I’d be able to change my global rules
for email. The webpage has changed since I used it three years ago so was
wondering how I can change some of my global rules please.

Thanks so much.
Kawal.
