clicking buttons on my Mac

I’ve been having trouble clicking buttons on websites using Safari on my new Mac. I can have the button in focus. I even press vo-command-f5 to make sure I’m really there but I try to. click it and nothing happens. I click using vo-space as I always have. what setting might I need to check in
