Re: Activator, and iPhone transition to USBC

2023-12-11 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jason,

I would imagine that that is true. There’ll still be people with lightning
iPhones for a long time to come. And Angie’s point is a good one. I always do
keep an old phone in the mix, first, to have a backup, and Second, to use as a
music player when I want that functionality to be separate from my phone.
Cheers,
Donna

Yes, I expect this to be possible. You might also have the option of
deciding which dock to purchase when buying a display.

Re: Activator, and iPhone transition to USBC

2023-12-11 Thread 'Angie Nutt' via MacVisionaries
If I were going to buy one I’d wait at least until the price of the new docking
station was announced. I’ve just had a thought though: if one does buy the new
docking station and keeps an older iPhone as well, presumably one could chop
and change between the two docks, making it a more flexible device.

I agree re the bugs which might occur etc and the fact that things aren’t
always released on time.

All the best

I’m glad to hear they’re working on it. If you can, wait until they’ve done it
before shelling out any money or at least wait until they announce the price;
the new docking station may not cost too much and may be something you can
purchase later.

Hi all,

So, I wrote to Helptech with Angie’s question. Unfortunately, the response I
received was not what I had hoped for. Here it is.

“Thank you for your interest in our Activator. We are aware that the new iPhone
generation will be equipped with USB-C. That is why we are already working on a
new docking station. This will be available in the first quarter of 2024, i.e.
by the end of March at the latest. We will announce the cost of this before
Christmas. Unfortunately, I don't know it right now.
However, it is also possible (from the new firmware version) to use the USB-C
interface directly on the left-hand side of the device instead of a docking
station. This has the disadvantages that the Activator and the iPhone are not
charged during operation and you cannot use a USB stick (on the docking
station).
The firmware of our Braille displays is constantly updated and adapted to the
latest technology as far as possible.”

So, it sounds like anyone who purchases now will have to shell out more money
for a new dock, once they upgrade to a newer iPhone. I think that rules me out.
Cheers,
Donna
