Re: Help with references in Pages 09

Hi Thomas,

You asked earlier about writing in APA style format for Pages 09. I don't use
this myself, but I did a Google search and found this web page, titled Apple
Still Doesn't have an APA Template for Pages?:
http://www.frameloss.org/2009/07/16/apple-still-doesnt-have-an-apa-template-for-pages/

Go to the link for APA Template for Pages 09 and download the file,
apa.template, then open this in Pages 09. This doesn't solve the issue of the
reference style format, but might be of assistance if you are supposed to
adhere to APA style writing in your paper format.

I know there are web cites that people use, such as citation builder, son of
citation, and bibme, to fill in forms and obtain references back in APA (or
other styles). These seem rather contrived to use. If you have an iPhone,
iPod Touch, or iPad, there is a free iCite APA app that is an app version of
the WriteCite.com web cite, and will take care of formatting APA style
reference lists:

iCite APA (free) by MasterGraphics Pty Ltd:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icite-apa/id429178021?mt=8

I don't know if you have an iOS device, but assuming you do, you could start in
the main iCite APA Menu page (Menu is 1st of the 3 buttons at the bottom of
the screen), then choose a category from the list that you want to use for
citation (e.g., Books, Journals, Internet, etc.) and then select the
appropriate sub-category (e.g., could be an Edited Book, Book, or Book
Chapter in the first instance). Then fill in the text fields (Author,
Title, etc.) and double tap the Preview button in the top right corner.
You'll be show the formatted citation on the Preview Citation screen, and you
can either flick right and double tap the Save Citation button at the bottom
left to save the citation locally in the app (for later access in the Saved
Citations menu -- 2nd of 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen), or flick
right again and double tap the Email Citation button at the bottom right.
(Although the app is supposed to italicize titles in its formatting, I don't
think this information is preserved if you mail yourself this information.) If
you want to look up a reference, you can choose the Worldcat Search (first
item in list) on the Menu screen. For example, if you want to find citation
references to books by a certain author, double tap the text box to enter the
name, then flick right to the Lookup button and double tap. You'll get a
number of matching results (prefixed with numbers -- hash marks surrounding a
catalog record number -- followed by the reference citation. If you want to do
a title search or subject search, move to the picker item in the center of the
screen, just below the Lookup button, and flick up to set the keyword to
Title. Then go back to the text field (e.g., flick left twice), double tap
to edit the entry; delete the old search term and type in the title, then flick
right to the Lookup button and double tap. You need to input a recognizable
title -- a few keywords won't work. If that's a problem, search on the
author's last name. As before, you can select a citation entry, then either
save it or email it.

The other thing you could do, following the comments on the linked web page at
the start of this post that gave the APA style template for Pages 09, is to
maintain your references in a database using the free BibDesk program, and then
run one of the CiteInPages AppleScripts to insert the references into Pages in
the APA style. Again, I don't have experience using this, and this may be more
work than you want to do, but it may be worth the investment if you're going to
do a lot of research paper writing in this format, and if there isn't an update
to Pages that adds these features. BibDesk is one of the tools that is used
with TeX (or the TeXShop program), but is freeware and can be separately used
to maintain your bibliography database.

I think the easiest solution for the present would be to use the iCite APA app,
or a web page equivalent if you don't have an iOS device. I'll give you the
URL of the CIteInPages AppleScripts. (BibDesk is linked on that page).

Is it possible to create these things in Pages? I know it is doable in other

What I do at this moment is:
Typing every single cite and reference down manually. Which takes up a lot of
my time, since I have to check that I do observe the rules of APA.
How it handles the cites: The user can choose which type of source is relevant
and then simply write the author, title etc. etc. and Word will insert the
information according to the APA-standard.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Best regards
