I had a notes folder/mailbox in SL apple mail. Maybe I remember wrong? I
can't find this in ML apple mail. I just need a handy way to jot down notes for
when I'm on the phone.

You can find them in the Notes app on your Mac.
You open it up, and there's a table that shows all your notes. Or you can just
type in the edit field there and the note will be saved.

These days when I want notes I use spotlight. I press command space type in
notes and it comes up right away oppress anarchy and there's my table. It used
to be part of mail, but it was changed with Mountain lion.

You can also find Notes in M L as a standalone app in the applications folder.
If you want, you can press command-shift-t to add it to the dock. (You can use
this shortcut to add any app to the dock once you focus on it in the
applications folder.)
