Problem editing calendar on El Capitan e3diting

Hello, I am running the latest El Capitan on my late 2008 iMac. I cannot edit either the event title or any notes to update a calendar entry. VO does not speak the characters in either of these fields as I arrow over them. Do others have this problem? If updating edit fields in calendar
