Trouble unlocking my Mac Book Ere with OS 10

Hi, How do you unlock a mac book Ere with OS 10 when you can't get the Apple ID and password through to Apple? I got a sighted friend who finally found out how to do it. I didn't quite understand how, so I'm not sure if it's an accessible method. So is there a good way to go about it?
