Re: More on the HomePod from hell
Hi Mary, Yeah, I just checked the pricing, and it appears to run about $600. So no, not cheap. But of all the Sonos products we've purchased, it was by far the most worthwhile purchase. We purchased ours back in 2018, and have never had a minute of trouble. My only complaint about it is that like all the Sonos products, it’s prone to dropping out of the system. However, that happens less frequently than it used to, and when it does, it’s easy to reconnect it in Control Center. hi Mary, You might be surprised what is available, and inexpensively, to insure your stereo equipment can connect to other things. Part of my professional life is as a radio producer. Often those working in broadcasting need to connect their standard equipment to these new toys, so smaller adapters exist that make this easy..and once you buy it, it lasts forever. I may be easing into off topic territory however. Still, depending on where you live, finding the toolscan be done. Hi Donna, Well good for you keeping those speakers. I think I’ve heard of Sonos amps, and I imagine they’re pretty pricey. I still have my old Adcom power amp and a preamp that dates from Gali sometime in the 80s maybe. A long time ago. It sounds great. But there’s no Bluetooth or anything anywhere, hence the HomePods. Like you, I used to have a giant collection of albums and then CDs. The albums are gone as is my beloved B and O turntable, and I ripped all the CDs into whatever lossless codec was at the time back when I had a Mac. Re: More on the HomePod from hell
Hi Karen, I *love vinyl, but boy I don’t miss storing all that. :). I had a *huge* album collection back in the day, which was later replaced by a pretty sizable CD collection. Although they’re smaller, the storage was starting to get on my nerves. I’ve kept some of my favorite cds, mostly because our internet goes out frequently. When that happens, we have an AB switch connected to the speakers my husband built, that switches between the Sonos amp—connected to our home system—and a CD player. So in a way we have the best of both worlds. :) Cheers, Donna > On Mar 29, 2024, at 9:59 PM, Karen Lewellen wrote: > > YOu are welcome Donna, > I do resonate with your feelings about apple quality control. > These devices are not personally options for me just now, a secondary > disability experience making them unsafe to use. > Still, I have my cozy stereo near my sofa, where music is, for me a physical > experience holding album covers and cd cases rich with memories, and hours > of both songwriting and music making..and you have your voice control smiles. > Glad there was a solution in the end. > Karen > > > On Fri, 29 Mar 2024, 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries wrote: > >> Thanks, Karen. Hi Mary, I wish I knew for sure. I think some of my trouble was created by me. I had the “clever” idea Thursday night that if I could pair it with my old iPhone 7, which I still keep around as a music player, it wouldn’t connect to our home, but should be able to connect to our wireless network. My hope was that that would allow it to update, which would then allow me to reset it, and set it up again using my iPhone 14 pro. But, and I don’t totally understand this, when you reset a HomePod, it still holds on to some of your settings. So when I connected it to my Mac, it downloaded software version 17.2, which, though not the current version was current enough for it to connect with our home. But, it still seemed to have had stuff from the earlier pairing, so instead of updating, somehow it seems to have downgraded our Home software, which meant that nothing worked. I do know that something like that happened because after I finally got it to work yesterday, I was prompted again to upgrade everything to the new home infrastructure. At that point it was late, and I was tired, so I reset the HomePod and went to bed, leaving the Mini unplugged overnight and all the next morning. When I finally had time to get back to it, the setup worked. It got setup in our home, and then immediately updated. By the way, re your stereo, we solved that problem by buying a Sonos amp. My husband built a pair of speakers when he was in college, and to this day I think they’re some of the best speakers I’ve heard. So, even though we wanted to go to a wireless system, there was no way we were giving up those speakers. I don’t remember the price of the amp, but it works very well, and gives us the option of having my husband’s speakers in our Home setup. Just thought I’d let you know that’s an option, in case it’s of interest. 😊 Cheers, Donna > On Mar 29, 2024, at 11:18 PM, Mary Otten wrote: > > So how did you get your problem resolved, Donna? Re: More on the HomePod from hell
So how did you get your problem resolved, Donna? I know they finally figured out a way to charge iPhones in the store which is a good thing, since that caused a big mess. I don’t think they’ve done that with HomePods. So how did you get yours done? I still have my pair of old HomePods connected in the front room. I love old-fashioned stereo, and the HomePods don’t compare with my big fat great stereo speakers. The only problem is, they don’t make equipment that connects like that anymore unless you want to spend we big bucks. So, we’re stuck with all this wireless crap. This is not progress, but what can you do? Sent from my iPhone > On Mar 29, 2024, at 7:45 PM, 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries > wrote: > > Thanks, Karen. It all worked out in the end. YOu are welcome Donna, I do resonate with your feelings about apple quality control. These devices are not personally options for me just now, a secondary disability experience making them unsafe to use. Still, I have my cozy stereo near my sofa, where music is, for me a physical experience holding album covers and cd cases rich with memories, and hours of both songwriting and music making..and you have your voice control smiles. Glad there was a solution in the end. Karen On Fri, 29 Mar 2024, 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries wrote: Thanks, Karen. It all worked out in the end. Re: More on the HomePod from hell
,Donna, I have a question. what need motivated your adding this new homepod in the first place? What in your current set up was no longer working to your satisfaction leading to your needing a new option? Just curious, especially given this latest chapter. However, for reasons I can’t begin to fathom, it downloaded 17.2, instead of 17.4, which is what the rest of my Home is running. I have my HomePods set to update automatically, so I figured I’d just set it up, and it would update automatically overnight. But apparently that was too much to hope for. Instead, it made a wreck of my home in the Home app. I have devices that have had multiple names, as I have moved them to different rooms. All those devices reverted back to an older name. And none of my accessories, other than the HomePods are responding. Does anyone have an idea what happened or thoughts on a possible fix? I’d really love to avoid deleting my Home and setting it up from scratch. TIA, Donna -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list.
