You're prompted when you press the button on the Web site requiring 
authentication to use the passkey. If memory serves, you're also 
prompted during passkey creation.


If the Mac doesn't have Touch ID, you may be able to authenticate with 
your account password. However, if the machine is old, it may not be 
running a version of MacOS that supports passkeys anyway.

At which point do you get the prompt to use touch ID?  One of my macs has got 
touch ID but another is quite old and hasn’t got one.  How would passkey work 
on such a machine?

issues. The prompt to use Touch ID to authenticate with the passkey was 
fully accessible when I last used it.


This was in Safari under Sonoma.
