One more option should work. Just download the pdf file., then open it from
your mac instead. Maybe it works to save it to iBooks or Voice Stream Reader.

Take care

Thanx so much for that little tidbit. I’ve noticed that as well with these
webbased pdf files, and have had to pay a lot more attention to those on the
web sites I’m sent to test for 508 compliant issues, which always have those.
Some of them are just readable files, but some of them are fillable, and the
readable’s are sometimes easier to navigate with adobe reader, but the
fillable’s have been a no go.

Re: Reading a big PDF file on mac

2018-03-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Try using Adobe Reader and see if you get better results. My thoughts below…

I have found especially with older MacOS that very large PDF and/or HTML can
cause issues when opened with Apple’s default application and VoiceOver.

Some of VoiceOver’s features like the item chooser and find seem to require
that VoiceOver build up an internal view of the document. So you can end up
with two or three representations of the same document. For example the web
standard documents can take several seconds when a same page link is clicked in
Safari with VoiceOver running on an El Capitan system.

Certainly in the Windows world, when a screen reader is running Adobe Reader
starts loading 1 page at a time if the document is over about 100 pages. So
perhaps try reading with Adobe Reader with the setting to load a page at a time.

Hello Ramy,

There is a free service available that will convert several different types of
formats to others that are more accessible. I just checked, and they handle
PDF files. I used the service several years ago and it worked well. I just
went to their site and was happy to discover that they are still up and
running. The service is called RoboBraille, and you can find them at:

http://www.robobraille.org

Please let us know if you meet with success!

Kindest regards from Austria,
