Re: Test Drive an Orbits Reader Display Anyone? I Don't think so

2019-03-15 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
I am not sure but can probably find out. Being that is is twice as
expensive as other displays (the Active Braille may be the one I saw and
would like to get that one), I was afraid to get too excited as the
program I was in might balk and ultimately they did.

The Focus 5th will connect if I turn the Mac on or unlock my phone,
its that good. And its just as easy to disconnect it too or switch to
another device.

its decent. Very easy to connect to any one of 5 devices. Sometimes too easy

Hello Everyone,

Among other goals, I was interested in test driving a few Braille
displays for use with my iOS devices.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the A.P.H. booth and discovered
that they had no Orbit Reader 20s on hand for visitors to explore.
While I was there, 2 other people walked up and asked about the Orbit
Reader 20 and were equally disappointed at the lack of a demo model.

I did, however, get a look at an entire host of other BRaile displays,
from other companies, including the latest version of the Focus 40.
Now, that, is a beautiful device.

Regardless, I was sorely disappointed at not having an opportunity to
test drive the Orbit Reader 20 Braille display.

And the beat goes on,

Re: Test Drive an Orbits Reader Display Anyone? I Don't think so

2019-03-15 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
I had my fingers on a HandyTech display for a few minutes and would
have liked to have kept it. It had an ergonomic display, not flat.

The Hims displays I have used developed many weak cells. At $70 per
cell its gamble how many out of 40 would be replaced. The Focus 5th I
have is just a few months old and has some cells that are problematic
right now. Not to mention the lack of development. One update in almost
a year. Other than that, its decent. Very easy to connect to any one of
5 devices. Sometimes too easy when you don't want a connection.

Re: test please ignore.

2018-01-30 Thread Jonathan Cohn
OK, since everybody is jumping on this one, I opened up MacVisionaries on the
GoogleGroups web site and click on contact owner.

Perhaps either the footer will be corrected or the + routing used by Google
will be trained to go to the proper place. I am now going to review my own
GoogleGroups list and see what shows up there.

BTW if anybody wants to discuss AppleScript or automations of Macintosh things
on a quieter list my Blind Automation list is still available.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: test

2016-05-20 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
CalDAV/CardDAV servers are available for the calendars/contacts, although
really you’d like to have that be part of ActiveSync push as well.
Alternatively, you could go the Apple push route and modify your dovecot to
support XAPPLEPUSHSERVICE which uses APNS to notify you; then you’re exactly
like OS X Server and in fact you need a copy to get the cert necessary to push
requests over to Apple. Some bloke has helpfully reverse-engineered it using
the sources Apple provided. If you can get a copy of OS X Server installed and
get your push cert, you can load it up and, as long as you don’t mind depending
on your carrier as well as APNS, you can have push notifications for mail, and
wave goodbye to all the EAS dependencies. I’m about to go there myself and I’m
torn between self-sufficiency and minimal dependency; I’ve a feeling that I’ll
ultimately conclude that since my carrier is IPv4-only I may as well depend on
APNS as well. I get IPv6 using IPSec back home; it’s the only way. You might
look at it; Apple have improved their IKE support considerably including IPv6
routed support.

It’s annoying as hell that you can’t just use standard stuff. Sure IMAP is not
ideal for mobile but if Apple will make exceptions for themselves then why not
standards-compliant mail servers? It’s a shame, but I guess the user
experience falls off a cliff when you start asking people to specify timeout
values in your user interfaces. Bloody NAT. If only we had IPv6 everywhere,
today. The network was not built for kludge on top of kludge like this. Until
then, it’s EAS or APNS. Pick your poison. :)

Re: test

2016-05-20 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Damned Apple, why can’t they support IMAP IDLE like civilised platforms? Why
make an exception for ActiveSync or (cough, cough) iCloud? Lock-in, I bet …

When I asked Jobs (or the person behind his email address) whether it was
political or technical, he said it was technical, specifically for battery
power reasons. There is some truth in this, but only insofar as IMAP not
providing a way to identify the NAT timeouts, the real solution to which is
IPv6. Be aware that both Apple Push and Exchange ActiveSync use cellular for
lower power consumption, even with Wi-Fi available, unless you explicitly
disabled it. The carrier settings specify your carrier’s NAT timeout, and you
will use that connection to long-poll for notifications.

Anyway, technobabble off. :)

Re: test

2016-05-19 Thread Scott Granados
Seems to be working now, I’ll see more when others post.

Thanks again folks and sorry for the spam to the list.

Just trying to get mail to work right here.

For what it’s worth, if anyone is interested I have an entirely open source
exchange alternative running that supports EAS including native active sync
with your apple devices. The Mac still needs to use IMAP as EWS isn’t
supported in the tool I’m using but i think I can add that as a second set of
packages which is the next thing to attempt. Anyway, if anyone is looking for
a replacement to exchange so they don’t have to make the gates family any
richer than they already are SOGo combined with dovecot, postfix and a few
other gimmicks makes for a nice option.

Thanks

2010-04-28 Thread Chris Blouch
Dunno if this was mentioned in the reviews but the first time a friend
and I tried a 3gs iPhone was at the AT&T store and it was a bit hard to
hear from the built-in speaker. Lots of ambient noise in some stores.
You might want to bring your favorite headphones along to really be able
to tell what's going on.

Hi Karen,

I concur with Scott's suggestions. Before you go to the store to
check out the iPhone, review the section on VoiceOver gestures in the
iPhone User's Guide:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/voiceover/en/
The direct link to the section on VoiceOver is:
http://help.apple.com/iphone/3/voiceover/en/iphddd0db38.html

VoiceOver gets turned on and off in Settings > General >
Accessibility > VoiceOver. I assume the store will have to turn this
on for you. Once you're on that screen, you can do a two finger
flick up to have VoiceOver read out the screen contents. If you want
to stop it, tap with two fingers on the screen. Then you can also
navigate to the next item and hear it announced by flicking right
with one finger, or listen to the previous item by flicking left with
one finger through the page.

You'll probably want to change the speaking rate, which is done with
a slider near the bottom of the VoiceOver screen. If you used a two
finger flick to read through to the end of the page, flick left with
one finger to get to the slider, or simply move your finger up from
the bottom of the screen to touch it. Then, flick up (to increase)
or down (to decrease) to adjust speaking rate.

The Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver screen also has a
"Practice VoiceOver Gestures" area that works like keyboard practice
mode: once you activate it (by double tapping) VoiceOver will
announce the gestures it thinks you made and the associated action
(e.g., "Flick right; move to next item"). Double tap on the "Done"
button at the top right of the screen to exit the "Practice VoiceOver
Gestures" area.

Another point: when a button or link has focus (because you've
touched it, or flicked to it), you can double tap anywhere on the
screen to activate it. Also, to go back to reach a previous screen in
a tree, you'll generally double tap a button at the top left of the
screen.

So, if you choose to set up the triple-click home as a toggle switch
for VoiceOver, after leaving the VoiceOver Screen by double tapping
the "Accessibility" button at the top left, flick right until you
reach the "Triple-Click Home" button (or just move your finger to the
bottom of the screen to touch it), and double-tap. Then, flick right
past "Off" to "Toggle VoiceOver" and double tap to select it. You
can leave the various "Settings" menu screens by simply pressing the
Home button at the bottom of the screen once.

On your iPad question, it should be possible to use the iPad without
an external keypad. However, what's very intriguing is a report from
TUAW that some people were able to use the iPad Camera Kit attachment
to hook up a USB keypad. This doesn't seem to be universal, since
some people commented that they got a "USB Device Not Recognized"
when they tried this, so we don't know which models this might work
with. It may just work as a feature that is not officially
supported. Here's the link to the TUAW article, "Dear Aunt TUAW: Can
I use a USB keyboard or headset with my iPad?" by Erica Sadun, April

Hi:

I don't see my messages either but when somebody response to something that
I've sent I can be relatively sure that my message made it. Quite often if you
look in a thread if it's continuous, you can see your post in that thread. I
think that my sent messages end up in the trash rather than in my in-box.

Hi, I use Google email and it is the same for me you want get a message no
matter what your setting is. What you can do is if using Outlook you can set
Outlook to give you a receipt. This way you know if your message is getting
to the group. You can also do a Bcc to yourself that way you know it is
getting through also. Just some thoughts.

Hi Paul,

I had this problem, and I had to make sure my google mail inbox was showing all

I hope this will work for you.

Well your messages are reaching the list regardless of whether you are seeing
copies of them or not. So, yep, your coming through loud and clear.

HI Donna,

Try searching for contacts and type in "Skype test call." If it pops
up, add it to your contacts. I think that will work.

Hi Dane,

I already have shbow off-line contacts checked, but the only contacts
that show up in the contacts table are those that I have added. Any
thoughts as to why the test option may not be showing?
TIA,
Donna

Yep its there in the Mac versions, you'll have to go into the "view"
menu and select "Show Offline Contacts" to bring the "Skype Test Call"
up in the contacts table.
